Kotatsu
A kotatsu (炬燵 or こたつ) is a low table (typically heated) that is intended for casual daily usage, enjoying the company of companions, relaxing, or occaisonal naps. A friend of mine recently commissioned me to construct a Kotatsu-inspired, low table to occupy a well-lit living room alcove.
The use case for a kotatsu inspired table is perfect - my client often spends time in this alcove drawing, relaxing, and socializing with his roommates and friends. The aesthetic direction is determined by his interior decoration, but also high-end furniture that incorporates a "product design" sensibility.
The end goal was to design a cohesive, functional table, but also exploring features such as a center space for storage, a drop-in heater, lighting and power outlet options.
